Talking Guitars #11: de Sitar

Het is een terugkerende rubriek op deze website: ‘Talking Guitars’. Pieter vertelt dit keer over een onverwacht ‘cadeau’ dat hij kreeg uit India: de sitar. Dat het toch tere instrument de reis had overleefd mag een wonder heten…

‘Als je toch naar India gaat, neem dan een sitar voor me mee.’

Zo grapte ik toen m’n broer met vriend in 1970 ging liften richting de Oost. Tot mijn grote verbazing seinde hij ’n maand of wat later dat er een flink pakket per post naar ons adres was gestuurd. Daar bleek een grote, zwarte, langwerpige doos in verpakt. Toen de deksel openging onthulde een hoes van dun katoen een pracht van een sitar.

Dat deze verre en tere voorvader van onze westerse gitaar de reis had overleefd mag een wonder heten. Want de klankkast is niet meer dan de huid van een uitgeholde kalebas waaruit de sitar wordt opgebouwd. De koffer van eigenlijk niet meer dan karton en doek bood maar net genoeg bescherming tegen het gooi en smijtwerk van het toenmalige vervoer, zo toonde althans een fikse scheur.

Je snapt, ik ben mijn broer en m’n moeder die het bedrag schonk altijd dankbaar.

Geïnteresseerd in de speelwijze van het sitarspel, bezocht ik concerten en zag zelfs Ravi Shankar in Amsterdam spelen met waanzinnige tabla spelers.

Het was uren en uren oefenen om de sitar enigszins te doorgronden. Alleen met het stemmen ben je gauw een half uurtje zoet. De 11 resonantiesnaren die onder de 7 bovensnaren liggen dienen namelijk zuiver afgesteld te zijn zodat ze gaan vibreren als hun specifieke toon gespeeld wordt. En trek voor het verwisselen van een nieuw setje snaren rustig een middag uit.

Pieter en de sitar

Ik heb erg veel plezier gehad van dit instrument. Je kunt er heerlijk op improviseren, songs begeleiden en een luisterend oor bereiken bij bv. meditatieve sessies. In mijn werk als leraar haalden de sitarklanken moeiteloos de Indiase sfeer tevoorschijn.

Zo af en toe haal ik hem uit de koffer om dromend wat te spelen, of juist om een song muzikaal te verfraaien.

Zomervriendschappen

Wij van TakandBand speelden onze muziek in Engeland, Ierland, Spanje en Portugal en mochten veel bijval en applaus ontvangen!

Van mei t/m juli ’25 was TakandBand in intieme bezetting (Pieter en Mirjam) op Europese vakantietournee door Engeland, Ierland, Spanje en Portugal.

Bestaande vriendschappen werden onderhouden én er werden veel nieuwe vriendschappen gesloten. Wat ook tot veel foto’s, filmpjes en mooie feedback leidde.
